Abstract

Media, specially Television, is most effective in sport. This effect, however, is not completely related to people’s priorities. Mass media are prone to elite sport because of economic benefits. On the other hand, nowadays, people like to engage in recreational activities. Our goal in this survey was to determine the effects of the media on sport for all and elite sport. In addition, we searched to find a relationsh4p between the media and sport. We sent questionnaires to faculty members of physical education in universities throughout the country (Iran). After receiving and analyzing 97 questionnaires, we found that the mass media have significant effects on both changing trends and behaviors toward physical activity, with a little more effect on trends. The mass media generally like to focus on rather elite sport than sport for all because of monetary benefits of the former. Factor analysis of data showed that the most important factor effecting sport for all and elite is “Simultaneous focus on both”. There is a little (20%) but significant relationship (P? 0.01) between sport for all and elite, and media. We found that media have more effects on changing trends rather than behaviors (doing physical activities) . Previous researchers claimed that the media is 78% effective on social trends, and 30% on changing behaviors toward physical activities. In summary, only 20% of the changes in sports are related significantly to the media. 80% of the changes are related to other factors.
